The purpose of the article is to review and study the statistical assessment of population literacy, as well as a detailed definition of the main methods of assessing and types of literacy of the population. This topic is high, since the level of literacy of the population is one of the main indicators of the standard of living of the population. The level of literacy simultaneously acts as a social and economic indicator that characterizes the level of development of society and public relations. As an economic indicator, the level of literacy of the population is the basis for the development of science and high-tech sectors of the economy. The level of literacy of the population characterizes the potential of the economically active population as a factor of production.
